Tribute
With deep sadness we announce the death of James Peter Gillespie at the Cowichan District Hospital on Friday July 27, 2012 at the age of 69 after a 10 month struggle with lung cancer, held in the arms of his loving family.
Born May 11, 1943 in Huddersfield Yorkshire he was the youngest of 8 children. Predeceased by his parents, Mary and Thomas Gillespie, Sister Joan and two infant brothers. Survived by his dearly loved wife of 46 years Christine and their two children Linda and Leo. Also mourned by his sisters Lillian, Muriel and Josephine, brother Tommy, as well as other relatives in England, New Zealand and Ireland.
Peter and Christine emmigrated to Canada in 1968 as part of a group of volunteers from St Brigid’s Church in Huddersfield with Christian Service Overseas which was part of Bishop O’Grady’s Frontier Apostles pioneer group in the Prince George diocese. They were based in Mackenzie where he worked his way up through the forest industry, from digging ditches, to working in the sawmills to accounting with BCFP and Timberwest for 31 years. He worked in Mackenzie, Honeymoon Bay, Port Renfrew and Crofton. Following that he was an Accounting Consultant for 10 years and worked for 4 years at Madrone’s Environmental.
His community service started with the nightly soup run to the homeless in Huddersfield with St. Brigids, and the St. Brigids Parish Council. His 44 years of service in Canada included: the Port Renfrew Community Association, Diocesan and Provincial Catholic School Boards, Queen of Angels School Board, St Edwards Parish Council primarily finances, teaching the Christopher Leadership Course, Treasurer of the Cowichan Valley Basket Society, and the Friends of the Cowichan Theatre.
The family wishes to thank: Eileen Martell, the wonderful people of the BC Cancer Clinic at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, the outstanding nursing staff on 2 South at the Cowichan District Hospital, Dr Malherbe and the caring pharmacists at Shoppers Drug mart, St Edwards Parish Family, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Women’s League and the warm and caring neighbours of Pine Ave and for all the compassionate support and prayers from our friends and family. Thank you for carrying us through this difficult time. Peter was an outstanding husband and father and will be deeply missed.
A mass for Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward’s Church, 2085 Maple Bay Rd, Duncan BC on Friday August 3rd at 1pm. Reverend Alfredo Montacelli Celebrant. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society or the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Dear Aunty Christine and cousins Linda and Leo. I have just viewed the loving and respectful funeral service for Uncle Peter, it was a truly fitting tribute to him and I’m sure he would have been so proud of how well Linda and Leo spoke of him. I know he is happy in Heaven, as he deserves to be. I only hope you get great comfort from this and knowing that he will, along with yourselves, be in our hearts and prayers.
God Bless, Love from Anne, Paul, Rebecca, Kieran and Hannah. xxx
