James Gary Bailey
November 1, 1941 - November 6, 2025
Tribute
Jim was born in Calgary and was adopted as a baby by James and Edna Bailey. Jim was
predeceased by his parents, his sisters Betty, Gayle and Marilyn, his sons Warren and Jeff, his
partner Marilyn Beattie, and by his Best Friend of 70+ years Doug Carter. He is survived by his
first wife and good friend, Judi Bailey, his sons Joe (Shelley) and James (Simon), his
granddaughters Meghan (Brady), Lindsay (Travis), Ashley (Landon), his great grandchildren
Owen, Wyatt, Mia and Levi, as well as many nieces and nephews and good friends.
After a stint in the Canadian Navy, Jim returned to Calgary where he met Judi. After they
married, they settled in Airdrie, living and working on a farm. They started their family soon
after having 4 sons, although Jim wished for a daughter, thinking (mistakenly) that girls would
be easier to raise than the boys.
Jim returned to the coast for several annual fishing trips finally deciding to sell everything and
move the family to the Vancouver Island, settling in an ocean view home at Cherry Point. Jim
worked selling firewood for a time and then started Jim Bailey Landscape Supplies, a thriving
small business that allowed him to set his own schedule so he could enjoy an afternoon nap
between loads every day.
Jim loved fishing but he hated eating fish, which worked out well for the rest of the family as he
always gave his catch away, except for crab, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Jim enjoyed travelling
with trips to Hawaii, The Bahamas, Cuba and Las Vegas, where he loved to play poker. Jim was
always a betting man, whether it was on the sex of his children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren before they were born, football or poker. He had many friends with a thriving
social life and was fondly referred to as ‘Judge’ or ‘Judgie’ around the poker table.
Jim’s greatest love was sarcasm, his true love language. If he was slinging it your way, you knew
you were important to him as he was a man of few words otherwise.
He passionately hated exercise and every vegetable known to man except for French cut green
beans.
The family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Dr. William Reynolds, Dr. Trevor Tsang
and Dr. Gisela Wenzel-Smith as well as the staff at Cowichan District Hospital ER, Three East and
the staff and volunteers at Cowichan Hospice House for their care and attention to Jim during
his brief illness. The family would also like to thank Jim’s good friend Bob for his friendship and
daily visits during Jim’s last month of life.
Jim requested there be no service as he didn’t want people to feel sad at his passing. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cowichan Hospice House or CDH Hospital
Foundation.
Jim would tell us all to place a bet on our favourite NFL team as it makes the games a bit more
exciting if there’s some skin in the game. Also enjoy a glass of Lamb’s Navy Rum and Coke and
toast to a life lived exactly as Jim wanted surrounded by all those that loved him.
