Hugh Marlen

October 2, 1947 - April 16, 2022

Tribute

It is with great sadness that I announce the unexpected and sudden passing of my beloved brother at the age of 74 in Duncan, BC.

Lloyd Allan Marlowe was born in Winnipeg, MB to Paul and Natalie Marlowe, after a trip to Vancouver with his cousin Ron in 1973. Hugh arrived back home and announced he was moving to BC to start a new life. In 1974 he had his name changed as he thought it sounded more professional. Although there was 12 years between us, Hugh was a dedicated, protective loving brother and I will always treasure the memories growing up and visits to BC.

Hugh dedicated over 50 years of his life working in the medical field both in Winnipeg and BC. He touched the lives of many people and helped to make their lives a little better. His last place of employment was the Wisteria House Group Home where he was a counsellor in Mental Health Illness and Addiction. He was a compassionate, caring, laid back and humorous person. In his early years in BC, Hugh loved gardening and canning, sailing, photography and just being surrounded by nature. Sadly, the last years were not so kind.

Hugh is survived by his sister Debbie Slobodian, niece Alanna and a few cousins. He was predeceased by his father Paul in 1986 and his mother Natalie in 2004 and by the love of his life Beverley Edwards in 2014.

At Hugh’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. I would like to thank Braeden and all the staff at the Warmland Shelter, Corinne and John Weber and HW Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre for all their help, compassion and kindness. As and expression of sympathy, we ask any donations in Hugh’s memory be made to CMHA Cowichan Valley or the BC SPCA, Cowichan Branch.
