Henning Jensen

May 8, 1935 - February 23, 2011

Tribute

Henning passed away in Cowichan District Hospital February 23, 2011 after a
short illness. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark May 08, 1935.
As a child, his family lived in Burma, Australia, South
Africa, India and eventually Vancouver where his father was
vice-consul for the Danish Embassy. He spent his high-school years in Vancouver where he made lasting friendships. Friends from those years described him as generous and
popular, with a great love of scouting, the outdoors and the YMCA. He was an excellent scholar and athlete who excelled in rugby and skiing and was a competitive gymnast, swimmer and equestrian. When his father was transferred back to Denmark, Henning
returned there, where he earned a degree in Forestry.
He immigrated to Canada in 1964, subsequently working as a
Professional Forester specializing in tree breeding for East
Asiatic”s Tahsis Co. in Gold River. He married in 1966.
During his years in Gold River, Henning was an active member
of the Lion”s Club . He spent his leisure time with his growing
family hiking in the area in the summer months and ice-skating
on the surrounding lakes in winter, as well as as cross-country
skiing in the back country.In 1980 the family moved to the Cowichan Valley where Henning continued his forestry work at the Cowichan Lake Research Station
until his retirement.He was a charter member of the Cowichan Valley Concert Band
and latterly the Cowichan Valley Community Band and an avid
member of the Cowichan Valley Folk Dancers until illness prevented
him from participating in any of these activities.
He was an avid reader who pursued courses in Philosophy and
Buddhism. He loved the outdoors and his dogs. He spent time as a volunteer at the SPCA in the Cowichan Valley and at Providence Farm where he enjoyed
walking the horses. Henning was pre-deceased by his parents, Herman Peter Jensen
and Viola Olivia Dagmar Jensen (Petersen). He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol, his step- children Greg (Niki), Wendy, and his children Lise (Jeff Hocking) and Andrew (Angela) seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his brother,
Joergen Faurbaek, of Hillerod, Denmark and many nieces, nephews and cousins and extended family. He will be missed.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
