Helen Tulip

October 9, 1940 - February 16, 2022

Tribute

In loving memory of Helen Elizabeth Tulip (nee Shaw)

Helen was born October 9,1940 to Richard and Helen Shaw in Stirling, Scotland. She told stories of growing up as a school Principals’ daughter with her siblings, skiing in Scotland, and of a road trip she took with her mother before leaving home at the age of 25. She bravely boarded a boat with a friend, and they sailed to a new life in Canada.

She arrived in eastern Canada and became a teacher in Ontario.  She made her way across the country by train and settled in Vancouver. It was there she met Jim Tulip, the man she would marry. They moved to the Cowichan Valley and had Jennifer and Ian.

Helen was an avid volunteer.  She and Jim were founding members of the Cowichan Folk Guild and Island’s Folk Fest, Scottish country dancers (and Helen a teacher), and Cowichan Bowmen’s Club members. Helen was involved with the Girl Guides of Canada and Boy Scouts of Canada for several years. She met many good friends along the way.

Jim and Helen went their separate ways, and Helen enjoyed a social retirement. Helen loved her quilting and crafting groups, played croquet, and volunteered with the Cowichan District Hospital Auxiliary. She loved camping with her grandchildren Brook and Cole, and her good friend Judy. She was a loving Mother and Grandma, and a good friend.

After a short battle with cancer, Helen passed away peacefully with her children by her side on February 16. Helen’s family would like to thank Dr Ibrahim and the staff at the Cowichan District Hospital for taking such good care of her.

Join us in St Ann’s Garden at Providence farm on Sunday July 10, 2022 between 10am and 1pm for an informal gathering to share stories and celebrate Helen’s life. Light refreshments will be served.

I am so sorry to learn of Helen’s passing. I remember her so well when she was part of the Sona Scottish Country Dancers and I learned a great deal from her. Helen was a really beautiful dancer, who will be greatly missed to all of the dancers in the Cowichan Valley. RIP, Helen.

Jennifer, beautiful tribute for your Mom. Jennifer and Ian two stories Mom shared with me.
Jennifer your mother couldn’t be prouder of the way you went back to work to support Brooke, Jennifer could have gone on welfare and stayed on it knowing she wouldn’t receive jays death benefits yet she went too work knowing Brooke needed her to. Ian Mom proudly shared on your birthday you would celebrate by having friends and family come over for a huge BBQ you do it every year,
Helen although you are in spirit, I want to thankyou for the time we shared on our dogwalks. We had a lot in common while we shared we supported each other even our spiritual beliefs you told me I enjoy our chats you’re very intelligent insightful with a great deal of knowledge along with street smart. I will definitely miss you Helen you are the tulip matriarch. Love and light
