Harold (Rob ) Robson Gent

June 27, 1940 - May 19, 2025

Tribute

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father Harold Robson (Rob) Gent on May 19, 2025, at the age of 84. Born and raised in Victoria, B.C., it is there that Dad met the love of his life, Lorraine. Predeceased by her on June 29, 2018 he is survived by his 3 children, Richard, Trevor (Debbie) and Darcy (Kim). He will be remembered by his grandchildren Brandon, Tisha, Kimberley, Cody, Owen and Erika. Dad also leaves behind his sisters Elaine, Fran and brother Greg.

Dad did many things through his life and one of his first jobs was as a Chokerman in the forest industry, before shifting into roles that brought him closer to working with people. He worked in the grocery business before moving on to be a driver/ distributor for Treasure Island products which distributed Nalley potato chips and other confectionary around the island. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase and run a grocery store in Duncan (Cowichan Grocery), where he became a familiar and friendly face in the community for many years. When he worked in grocery at ShopEasy, he met Alex Campbell who was dad’s best man at his wedding. Alex visited dad at his store to see his ‘operation’, albeit smaller than Thrifty foods, but was extremely proud of it nonetheless.

Later in life, Dad remained active and social, running the Lotto booth in Superstore and working at Duncan Auto Parts. He was known for his hard work, friendliness and warm smile wherever he went.

Dad had many interests and hobbies throughout his life. An avid outdoorsman, Dad enjoyed countless hunting trips across Vancouver Island and the B.C. Interior. A successful bowhunter, he would shed his boots to hunt in only wool socks to be quieter and sit for hours for a successful hunt. His other passion was country music and line dancing. With his extensive library of music (Both types ‘Country and Western’), he would DJ at many events. A talented line dance instructor, Dad shared his love for it through teaching and performing. He was a proud member of the Cross Country Dancers, where he met many great people and cherished friends. They would perform shows throughout the island and were successful in many competitions.

Dad’s greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends. He and Mom loved hosting and having the house filled with people, especially the kids and grandkids. Christmas was quite an event at their house. Dad will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him and we take comfort that Mom and Dad are now once again having a dance together.

Details of a celebration of life will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society of B.C.
