Gwendolyn (Gwen) Marlene Nesbitt

July 23, 1943 - June 18, 2019

Tribute

On June 18th 2019 Gwen Nesbitt passed away from her battle with lung cancer that most days she was to stubborn to admit was taking place. The mother of two children, Richard and Holly, and wife of Richard J.P. Nesbitt was born July 23rd 1943 in Edmonton A.B. Growing up she had a love of animals that started young with her two rabbits Flopsy & Mopsy, as well as a goat. Getting older in high school she learned many skills in cooking and sewing that she excelled at and later passed on to her daughter and granddaughters Elizabeth and Brooke.

After high school she met her future husband at dances held by the church when she was the CGIT leader and he was the boy scout leader. After their courtship and marriage, Gwen worked as a secretary at law firms to help put her husband through law school. Once schooling was complete the pair decided to relocate to Vancouver Island and bought their first home in Duncan, which some of the Nesbitt family still resides in too this day and they worked side by side in Dick’s office until their retirement a year ago.

An active member of The Eastern Star Gwen will forever be remembered as the ultimate host, though her family remembers her as more of a drill Sargent at those times. It was her determination for getting things done right that also made her a great member of the Canadian Parents for French that originally turned Duncan Elementary into a bilingual school, attended by her son and later one of her granddaughters.

Although her physical activities were greatly restricted in her last five years, she worked to organize a lifetime of recipes and a cookbook collection that now sits at about 450. She continued with her hobbies of sewing, knitting, puzzles, and canning, which soon won her 2 awards at the local fair including best relish. When ever asked about it she would be completely amazed stating “it was just relish!”

The wife, mother, grandmother, and friend will be forever loved and missed by those who met her.

There will be a celebration of life July 3rd at 2pm at 5285 Polkey Rd. Duncan B.C. for those who wish to join us in commemorating her memory

H.W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Heather Cameron
Relation: Friend

Sending my heartfelt sympathies to you, Richard and family. I was fortunate to meet Gwen when I worked at “Bird, Coleman, LaCroix, Nesbitt”, many years ago. I was also fortunate to be given, by Gwen, a special recipe that she made for my bridal shower. It was, what I call, “Mrs. Nesbitt’s German Flan Cake”. It is, and always will be, a favourite of our family. Cherish your memories. I know Gwen will be missed by all that knew her. Sincerely, Heather Cameron (nee Scott)
