Gordon William Welsh

May 2, 1934 - August 27, 2023

Tribute

Gordon Welsh, born in 1934, passed away at home on August 27, 2023. Gordon was predeceased by parents Stewart and Ida, and his siblings and their spouses Ed (Hazel), Marge (Herb), George (Kay) and Ruth (Art). He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mikki, daughters Kim (Bill) and Shannon, grandchildren Taylor and Mikaela, and his nephews and nieces.

Gordon had a curious mind and was a treasure hunter. Over the years he enjoyed gold panning, coin collecting, beach combing, ocean fishing, mushroom picking, restoring pump organs, bottle picking, garage sales, jigsaw puzzles and lottery tickets.  But his greatest treasure was Mikki, his beloved wife of 67 years. They met in 1955 at Norwood United’s Young People’s Group (Edmonton) when Gordon was pursuing his university degree (eventually completing a Master’s in Social Work) and Mikki was training to be a nurse. Together they marched to a different drummer and what beautiful music it was!  In 1967 they left Alberta for Vancouver Island where they mostly lived off the land, hobby farming for many years before ultimately settling in Lake Cowichan.

Gordon, we will miss your wit, intelligence, and kindness and you will remain forever gentle on our minds. As requested, there will be no formal service; in lieu of flowers please give to a charity of your choice.

My condolences to the entire family. In my younger years I had the privilege of meeting Kim’s father. A good man indeed and it saddens me to hear of his passing. I will remember him fondly.

From: Jane Sharpe

Was so very sad to hear this today, you kept me amused most days at Lakeside Medical for which I was always grateful, condolences and much love to you Mikki.

From: Helen Wydenes
Relation: Friend and neighbor at the condo.

Dear Mikki, so sorry to hear of Gordon’s passing. I will forever remember Gordon as the “Wellington Lamplighter” for all those years he faithfully saw that all the emergency light were in good working order. I am sure you will miss him so after the many years together, but also something to be thankful for.
