Glenna Lorraine Reid (Pettigrew)

November 23, 1927 - May 15, 2024

Tribute

Glenna Lorraine Reid, nee Pettigrew

Born November 23, 1927 – Biggar Saskatchewan. Passed peacefully May 15, 2024 – Duncan BC

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Arthur Slater (1964) and Wallace Daniel Reid (2011).

Lorraine is survived by her daughter Cherryl (Robert, passed 2002) Halbert, and sons Thomas (Joké, passed 2020) Slater and Glen (Jill) Slater; her grandchildren Lorreena (Roland) Shaw, Robert (Lori) Halbert, Jeffrey (Kandi) Slater, Trevor (Lynda) Slater and Phil (Lenneke Vinoly) Slater; great grandchildren, David, Dustin, Daniel, Darian, Kelley, McKenna, Ace, Camello, Giovanni, Amelia and Harper Grace; great great grandchildren Ivy and Tripp.

She is also survived by her siblings Verna Jenkins, Sharon (Doug) Hunt, Brenda (Dan) Sheen and  Bill (Cathy) Pettigrew.

Lorraine spent the vast majority of her life as a true matriarch, community builder, and competitor.  Starting out on farm in rural Saskatchewan with her parents and siblings before moving west with her family.  There she supported the war efforts building naval ships in the Esquimalt dockyard.  After the war, she met Henry and settled in Victoria where their three children were born and raised.

After Henry’s passing, she met Wallace (Wally) and eventually relocated to Shawnigan Lake where the two of them owned and operated the local Esso Service Station. While working there, she handled the emergency phone lines for the towing service and the fire department, pumped gas, changed tires, as well as provided bus services for students attending Shawnigan Lake School.

Wally and Lorraine retired from the Service Station in 1987 and relocated to Parksville.  Retirement didn’t slow her down as she continued to be an active member of the bowling community, Pheasant Glen golf course, the SOS Thrift Store and the Parksville Chapter of the Canadian Legion.  Throughout her life, from as early as 1952, Lorraine was an elite level 10-pin bowler.  Winning many city and province wide titles, often alongside her sisters.  Championship bowling allowed Lorraine the avenue to travel the Western Coast in Canada and the USA, where she continued to roll into the 2000’s.

In her final stages of life, Lorraine moved to the Cowichan Valley to be closer to her immediate family. Here she found peace, relaxation, and community at Sherwood House before arriving at Cairnsmore Place.

A phenomenal source of inspiration and wisdom, she taught everyone in her lineage the importance of hard work, tough love, and solid support.  Unfazed by numerous difficult situations, Lorraine remained positive and continued to guide her family lovingly onward.

A Celebration of Life for Lorraine will be held at the Cowichan Golf Course on June 23rd, 2024 at 1:00.  Her family wishes to thank the many caregivers and support staff at both Sherwood House and Cairnsmore Place.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
