Tribute
George H. Smith
(of Mill Bay)
1926 – 2010
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces George’s passing in the early hours of Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 at the age of 83 years.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean, daughters, Susan, and Jennifer (Art), brother (James), and sister (Rose), four grandchildren, fourteen great grand-children, many nieces and nephews. He had many friends, near and far, who will miss him dearly. He was an honourable man who had great respect for humanity and nature.
Born in London, England in 1926, George later organized a local of the Transport Workers Union. After serving in the British army, he moved his family to Regina, Sask., Canada in 1957. In 1958, he started work at Saskatchewan Power Corp. and became a member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Local 9-649. He was active in the Regina and District Labour Council. He was particularly passionate around occupational health and safety issues, and was instrumental in the establishment of Medicare in Sask. George fought to correct injustices and was always helping others.
Upon retirement, George and Jean came to Vancouver Island. He and his wife did relief work in West Coast lighthouses, volunteered in many areas with the folk music society, and delivered Meals on Wheels. His love of music, reading, family times, gardening, and fishing gave him contentment during his retired years.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the Cowichan Folk Guild or the Victoria Folk Music Society. Online condolences may be offered at www.hwwallacecbc.com
