George Hebbert

September 18, 1930 - September 8, 2020

Tribute

George was born in Vancouver BC to John and Mary Hebbert. They moved to Maple Bay when he was two. While his father hand-build their home in Maple Bay, he and his parents lived with their relatives at the Elkingtons at what is now the Garry Oak Preserve. In 1957, George married Shirley Knox, a nurse at the Kings Daughters’ Hospital (now Cairnsmore). As a young man, George and his father operated Hebbert Enterprises on Evans Street, a machine and fabricating shop. George was a machinist, a welder, a mechanic and an entrepreneur. He and his wife Shirley built and operated the Hebberts’ Marina (now Bird’s Eye Cove Marina). George could build or fix anything – some of his creations include a submarine, an ultra-light aircraft, a steam motorcycle and two steam cars. He was an authority on steam-power and generously donated equipment, time and expertise to the BC Forest Museum.
He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley, sons Brian and John, daughter-in-law Janet, and grandchildren Zachary, Kaitlyn and Reid.
A small family service was held at St Peter’s Church on Sept 19 where he now rests in peace.
