Tribute

It is with great sadness that I, Frances, announce the passing of my husband of fifty-five years, Frank Leggat.  Frank was a real gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour.  He opened doors for ladies to let them go in first and never wore a hat indoors.  He was very social and will always be remembered as a big tease.  Frank enjoyed hugs, loved his family and always held a special place in his heart for the many pets throughout the years including our most recent cat Tommy.  Some of his favourite pastimes included driving, dancing and golfing.  Frank was Mr. Manitoba Farmer in 1971.  Our farm was chosen over 12 other farms in Manitoba.  He was judged on his farming practices, community involvement, farm appearance, and financial books.  We raised hogs with 1000 to 1100 in the barn at all times.  Frank was top producer of the best hogs in Manitoba once in the province and twice in our area and received top awards weekly.  He was also involved with many farm, school, church and community organizations.  As Birtle Centennial Committee President, Frank helped plan the town’s One Hundredth Anniversary.  Our daughter Cheryl wrote the Centennial song and our daughter Colleen designed the logo chosen for the letterheads and souvenirs, etc. Frank also served as president of the Agricultural Society when it celebrated its Centennial.  When we moved to Penticton, Frank and I started the Friendship Force – the first club in BC and the fourth in Canada. Our club’s motto is “A World of Peace is a World of Friends.” As a group we would travel to other Friendship Force clubs around the world, stay with them for a week and they would show us around their area. We would also host two clubs a year for a week and show them around our local area.  Frank developed Alzheimer’s later in life and we recently moved to Duncan to be closer to our family. He was a wonderful father to our four children; Bryon (Jay), Cheryl (Clive), Colleen (Mike) and Jeff and a loving grandfather to our grandchildren; Katy, Sarah, David, Kalyn, Cara and Kenzie.

Pat and I send our sympathies to you Frances and family. As little girls we remember going on picnics with our parents and Frank. We were at your wedding shower at the farm – I remember it raining. Our Mom, Elise Berry was a member of the fair board with Frank and I am sure that our Dad, Art would have done farm work with him. Frank’s mother would invite us to her house in town for lunch when we were in Elementary School. We remember the Rice Krispie and caramel covered marshmallows for dessert. Our father actually built that house for Mrs. Leggat. With love, Diane and Patsy Berry
