FRANK GROENEWOLD
1945 to 2024.
It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Frank Groenewold on September 21, 2024 at Cowichan Hospice with his family by his side, after a courageous 12 year battle with Cancer.
Frank was born in Holland, the youngest in a family of 12 children, and immigrated to Canada. They travelled by train across Canada and arrived in the Cowichan Valley in January, 1954.
Frank grew up on the family farm in Cowichan Station, where he attended Cowichan Station Elementary, then George Bonner and Cowichan High Schools. He graduated in 1964. After attending UVIC, he taught elementary school, high school and became the principal in an elementary school in Maple Ridge.
Frank attended UBC and obtained his M.Ed. degree and later attended SFU and obtained his Doctor of Psychology degree in 1990. He started his Counselling Practice in Abbotsford and started a new practice after moving back to Duncan. He loved his work as a Counselling Therapist. His clients came from all walks of life and he helped them to become the person that they truly wanted to be.
Frank’s final days were spent listening to music – orchestral, choirs and hymns of praise to the God he loved. He was often observed conducting the orchestra or tapping to the beat of the music!
Special thanks go to the Hospice team for their loving care for Frank in his final days. He was exactly where he wanted to be! Also very special thanks to his health care team: Dr. Gisela Wenzel-Smith, Dr. Caroline Stigant, Dr. William Nielsen, Dr. Drew Phillips, Dr. Caon and her team at the Cancer Clinic in Victoria. Your efforts in caring for Frank have been exceptional and greatly appreciated.
He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his family: his wife of 57 years, Margaret; sons, Ron (Elizabeth) and Ernie (Diane); grandchildren, Veronica and Tony; one sister, Mary; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Duncan Christian Reformed Church, 930 Trunk Road, Duncan, on November 18th at 2:00 p.m.
The family expresses their appreciation for the support that they have received from their community at this difficult time.

Frank was one of my officemates in Duncan for over 10 years until his retirement at the end of September 2023. I enjoyed chats we had at the office and admired his dedication to serving others as he continued counselling clients into his late 70s. He often talked about how much he loved his work and, when he retired, he talked about how much he was going to miss it. Many people (clients, their family members, colleagues) benefitted from his work and he leaves a very positive legacy. My condolences to his loved ones.
