Frances Leggat

January 11, 1935 - May 13, 2019

Tribute

“With a presence larger than life itself, Frances brought joy, love, and laughter to all.”

Frances Leggat was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba January 11, 1935, to Dutch parents Johannes and Cornelia Vergonet. She passed away peacefully in Duncan May 13, 2019. Survived by sisters Trudy and Joan, predeceased by siblings Margaret, Corey, Lyn, Anne, and brother John. Also survived by her children Bryon (and partner Jay), Cheryl (and husband Clive), Colleen (husband Mike), and Jeff. Grandchildren include Kalyn, Cara and Kenzie (Cheryl and Clive), Katy, Sarah, and David (Colleen and Mike), and beloved cat Angel.

Frances grew up in Winnipeg, completed Business College, and then went on to get her nursing diploma (R.N.) at St. Boniface Hospital. Upon marrying Frank October 10, 1959, she moved to Birtle and raised their four children on the family farm. Frank and Frances retired in Penticton and after starting the first international Friendship Force Club in B.C., travelled around the world. They moved to Duncan in 2012 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In 2015, Frank passed away and Frances became more involved in the community, including the Duncan United Church.

She loved dancing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Frances Monday, May 20 at Duncan United Church – 246 Ingram Street at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the B.C. Alzheimer’s Society and Canadian Diabetes Association.

Dear family of Frances Leggat!
A friend has gone.
We are very sorry for your loss.
Never we will Forget your Frances’s humor and all the funny e-mails she sent to us. Now is silence “on her line”. We are sad.
Your mum and dad was a great and long Frienship Force friend of us.
Luckily we hosted them years ago in our home.

Relation: Her accountant for 20 years.

My sincere condolences on the passing of your mom Frances. I have known Frances for many many years (20 I think), I knew both her and Frank when they lived here in Penticton. Frances was always so kind to me, always leaving fun little notes with her taxes to to keep everything fun and light. We shared a love of cats which we talked about often. Once she moved to Duncan, I was lucky enough to speak with her often and received many pictures of “Tommy the cat”. It was my privilege to have known your mom all these years, she was just a lovely lady through and through and I know she will be missed by many. My sympathies to you and your families. Andrea Kemp, Penticton, BC
