BARBARA. I stopped in on your mom and dad a couple of times on the island when I was living in Victoria 20 years ago. Your dad was always so hospitable and interested

Dear Gudrun and Family,

In our short time in the valley, we have come to know and greatly appreciate you both.
We add our voice to those of your friends and family to offer condolences, and support in this time of Ewald’s loss.

From: Tanis Bapty
Relation: Fabric friend of Gudrun's.

Dear Gudrun,

I have to add to our condolence message, and say how much fun it was to deliver fresh Saltspring Island kale to your house, and to receive such a warm response to the vital vegetable. Yours and Ewald’s hospitality was so gracious and pleasant, it is a memory that we will treasure.

With love and prayers,

Tanis

We are saddened to hear of Ewald’s passing. Katie and I knew him as a friend. Kind to a fault, he was generous with his opinions, experienced and knowledgeable about both his profession and even more so about life, We wish Gudrun and family all the best both for now and in the future..

From: Edward Boddaert
Relation: Friend

My sincere condolences to Gudrun and family as Ewald begins his next journey. I shall miss our monthly chats at the Probus meetings. As a fellow model ship builder my trips to Cowichan Bay were enhanced by visits to Ewald’s display of his remarkable craftsmanship in this hobby.

A friend who will be sadly missed.

Ed.

From: Stephen Faulkner
Relation: Colleague

Dear Gudrun and family,
I was very saddened to hear of Ewald’s sudden passing. I last spoke with him about a month before and he was his usual resolute self – never complaining.
As you know, Ewald and I worked in the operating room together for ten years, two mornings a week wrestling for the same confined space around the ears, nose and throat. Never once did we have a disagreement. It was a special relationship with mutual respect and trust on both sides. We both new each other’s foibles under stress!
I was very lucky to hear first hand many of Ewald’s war stories – the fear he experienced being taken prisoner of war on the Russian Front on his 19th birthday. How he survived 6 months as a prisoner of war and how he escaped and made his way across the Ukraine to Germany when it was over.
We also discussed politics, aviation medicine, serous otitis media, tonsillectomy under GA vs local, a little religion, English grammar (or the lack of it) and of course all the great sailing adventures of the world and how to build replica model ships from scratch with only original sailing plans to go by.
Our three children, James, Eliza and Peter reaped the benefit of knowing you both as youngsters and you were surrogate grandparents for them and always will be. They were saddened to hear of his passing when they got the news and had memories to share.
And so ends a life well lived. Our family will treasure his memory always. And yes, we will take you up on the offer to drop in for a cup of tea any time, Gudrun.
Many blessings on you and the family as you move on in your lives resolutely as Ewald would have you do.
Love from the Faulkner family,
Stephen Faulkner
