Ernest (Roy) Laird

June 27, 1928 - January 26, 2022

Tribute

Roy passed away peacefully at Chemainus Health Care Center with family by his side on January 26, 2022. He was predeceased by his wife Marion on May 6, 2021. They had been married for 65 years and now are reunited again.

He is survived by daughter Sharon (Allan), son Micheal, daughter Janet (Larry), adopted daughter Tracy, sister Mabel (Wally); brother in law Alan Quarmby (Emily), 13 grandchildren and great grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy was born on a farm near Swift Current Saskatchewan into a large family of 9 sisters and 2 brothers. In his late teens he realized prairie farming was not for him so he got a job in Northern Ontario using a suede saw to cut pulp. That began his career in the forest industry that eventually brought him to Vancouver Island working as a logger for several years. He then worked at the Youbou sawmill as lumber grading and a planer for 34 years. In retirement he bought a portable sawmill and continued working with lumber and logging his own property. He was a firm believer in select logging for the health of all forests and practiced this himself. Eventually he subdivided and built Relke Place Road and the north portion of Relke Road joining onto Jackson Valley Road. This was a highlight in his life as, without engineering experience, he came up with solutions that resulted in a fabulous road. Vegetable gardening was also a loved hobby of his and he spent many hours working in the garden and blessing many people with the bounty.

Roy was very involved at Duncan United Church and  AOTS group for 60 years. He also volunteered with the Heart and Stroke foundation for many years. He set a wonderful example of giving of his time to help others, especially lonely seniors.

Special Thanks to the wonderful care by the staff of Steeples Assisted Living, Chemainus Health Care Center, Dr Szabo and Dr Manhas. A Celebration of Life is hoped to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Duncan Hospice Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Relation: Next door neighbour

I will always have fond memories of our childhood years growing up next door. Mr Laird was always good to us and we loved to ride in his old green Ford truck down the back of his property when he cut firewood. We played in the woods while he loaded the truck. Then we would pile in the truck and try to make it up the hill full of firewood. He would often have to back up, and take a good long run to get up the hill. The engine would be roaring as we charged back up the hill. Those were fun times. Mr Laird was always friendly and kind to us over the last sixty years of knowing him. Also remember him milking Gracie the cow. Your Mom and Dad and my Mom have all passed into God’s presence within nine months. I am sorry for your loss but for them it is far better.

So sorry to hear of Roy’s passing, My condolences to the family. I remember meeting Roy when he came canvassing for the Heart and Stroke foundation door to door in the Bell McKinnon neighbourhood in the 1990’s. He was such a kind man and a good neighbour. I will always remember the day he asked if I was able to come and help Marion with the housekeeping in her later years and I enjoyed getting to spend time with them both. I hope they are reunited once again.
