Tribute

Emma (Emmy) Johanna Paras

April 9, 1940 – February 16, 2019

Emmy passed away peacefully in her home on February 16th, 2019 from complications associated with A.L.S.  She was born on April 9th, 1940, on Sumatra, Indonesia, where her father established and operated rosin and turpentine factories for the Dutch government.  When Japan invaded Indonesia, Emmy, her two sisters and her mother were taken to a number of concentration camps where they had to endure a brutal existence.  After the war and their eventual return to Holland, the family made a decision to emigrate to Canada in 1955 and join other members of Emmy’s father’s family, who sponsored them.

Emmy will always be remembered for her enthusiastic and dedicated presence during the formation of a competitive swim team in Duncan in the early 1970s.  She assumed the role of team manager and sometimes assistant coach.  She may have been tiny in stature however she had a huge spirit for life and the love of her family and friends.  Her daily presence will be strongly missed, but her kind spirit will forever live on through the many relationships she forged in her lifetime.

Emmy is survived by Dave, her husband of 54 years, and their two children, Michael and Nicole, her four grandchildren: Willow, Mei-Ling, Jessie and Jake and her three siblings: Wilhelmina, Hanneke and John.

A celebration of life will be held at H. W. Wallace chapel on Sunday April 7th, 2019 at 1:00pm                       .

In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate that support and donations be made to the A.L.S. Society of B.C.
