Elden William Kier

February 25, 1918 - August 17, 2016

Tribute

After a full and happy life, Elden has left us to join his beloved Winnie  (deceased January 28, 2001)  He missed her terribly this past 15 years.

Elden was born in the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Duncan to Bill and Hattie Kier, nee Evans, in 1918.  Elden attended Duncan School, Stuart Wood Elementary in Kamloops, Lister-Kelvin Jr. High and Duke of Connaught High Schools in New Westminster, and graduated from Lord Byng High School in Vancouver in 1936.  He graduated from UBC in 1940 and served in the RCAF 1941-1945.

Elden was descended from pioneers on both sides of his family.  His maternal grandfather was James Evans.  Evans Street in Duncan was the boundary between the James Evans farm and that of W.C. Duncan after whom Duncan is named.  James Street is named after his grandfather.  His paternal grandfather, Archibald R. Kier, came here in 1862 and settled at Somenos.  In the early 1870’s, A. R. Kier donated part of his farm to the Methodist Church at Somenos where a church and small adjoining cemetery were located at the NE corner of Somenos and Drinkwater Roads.  Today it is the site of Mountain View Cemetery.

Elden was a well-respected teacher at Cowichan High School from 1949-1979.  An avid gardener and golfer, Elden also enjoyed many trips with Winnie, their favourites being the UK and Hawaii where they spent many winters after his retirement.

Genealogy was very important to Elden and he has left a wealth of information on his family heritage to pass on to his children, grand children and great grandchildren.

Elden was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Winnifred in 2001.  Also predeceased by sisters Dorothy, Eileen and Verna. Survived by son Larry (Audrey) and daughter Joanne Morris.  Grandchildren  Leanne, Kevin, David, Graham, Shannon, Karli, Heather and Braeden.   Elden’s great grandchildren are Kayla, Keaton, Kali, Cade, Rowan, Spencer, Kaia, Jackson and Aaron.  Also survived by his special niece, Bonita.

No service by request.  If you wish to make a donation, Elden liked to support the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation and the Cancer Foundation.

Elden & Winnie – together at last, forever.

From: Jim Moore
Relation: Student in high school

Mr Kier, for that is how I remember him as the teacher of our Social Studies 10 class in 1952-53. It is how I remember him still. Mr. Kier was one of many excellent teachers in the high school at that time. His influence was felt by hundreds of students. I am thankful for his long life.

From: Donald Schmidt
Relation: former student

None of you will know me, but it was Mr. Kier’s enthusiasm for history – Canadian history especially – that in turned inspired my passion for history, and for digging just a little deeper. Rest in peace, Mr. Kier – you have had a powerful effect on my life.

From: Liz Bastin
Relation: Friend

I will always remember you. Rest in peace with your lovely Winnie

From: Jan Norman (Selzler)

Joanne & Larry, Sincere condolences on the loss of your father. I still remember the trip to Disneyland your parents took me on. Your father had a very full life and I know you miss him and your mother very much.
Take care.
