Dwayne Douglas Berg
March 3, 1961 - April 3, 2015
Tribute
Beloved son of mother Shirley Lorene Berg and father Douglas Peter Berg (deceased). Survived by his best friend and step-father Jim Painter, his sister Sherri Thomson, Princeton, of whom he was so proud and Graham Painter who he loved as a brother. He also leaves his very loving companion Hilda Jack of Penelakut Island. She was the love in his life, his cooking partner and his care giver. Dwayne was born in Kings Daughters Hospital in Duncan. In his school days he lived on Gibbins Road and went to Duncan Elementary School, Mount Prevost and Cowichan Senior Secondary. In those years he loved hunting and fishing, spending many happy hours at the Cowichan River and fishing in Cowichan Bay. His weekends were filled with fishing and camping with his parents and grandparents. His dream was always to own a commercial fish boat, as he spent several summers on one. Dwayne was a constant reader, there was never a time he was without a book in his pocket. Fantasy was his topic of choice. He loved to say that he had travelled the world over as he read every page in each months National Geographic and watched all the National Geographic videos. Dwayne loved to exchange stats on all hockey and football games with the guys. He had a memory for numbers. Dwayne often said he had donated his life to his mom and Jim as he worked for them first at Duncan Restorations and then at Duncan Electronics and finally at their commercial buildings in Duncan. He did everything from carpentry, drywall, plumbing, painting, roofing to regular maintenance, both inside and out. He was very proud of the buildings and considered them his own. He took responsibility very seriously. Dwayne had many hard times in his life as he was a very caring and giving person. He liked everyone on the streets and helped them all. Often going without himself as he would give everything he had to others. Dwayne lived at Wild Rose Apartments his last several years. Thanks to Theresa Doney for her friendship to him and her understanding of his life style. Also, thanks to our friend Brenda Vian for cleaning his apartment and for her friendship with Dwayne. H.W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre will be looking after his cremation. There will be no service at this time, a private spreading of his ashes will take place this summer at his favorite place in Genoa Bay. Dwayne and Hilda spent many weekends canoeing, getting oysters, setting crab traps and enjoying the eagles, seals, otters and all the birds, especially the hummingbirds. He enjoyed his time in the gardens and doing all the repairs on his mother’s home. No son was ever more loved and cared for than Dwayne. I’ll see him standing on the point in the morning or in the moon light gazing out into Cowichan Bay calmly enjoying his first or last cigarette, a calm, peaceful, emotional and caring man. Donations may be made to the Cowichan Valley Food Basket or to the Canadian Wildlife Foundation. Cards will be gratefully received by his mom Shirley Berg: 669 Kerr Dr., Duncan, B.C., V9L 5Y6.
