Douglas Stewart

February 3, 1928 - February 25, 2017

Tribute

After a wonderful adventure, Douglas passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years in Duncan, BC, on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

Doug, eldest of three children born to Edna Louise and Samuel Hayes Stewart was born in Indian Head, SK on February 3, 1928. He was a loving brother to Noreen Hutchinson of Victoria, BC and Ed Stewart of Calgary, AB. Doug’s passion to teach led him to UBC where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1961. Soon after he earned a Master’s degree in Education from Western Washington State College in Bellingham.

While teaching in Nakusp, BC in 1967 he met Christa, his wife. A few years later they relocated to the Cowichan Valley where they raised their children; Mike Mead (Laurie), Bruce Mead (Karen), Judy Mead (Orion), Ron Stewart and Kim Stewart.

Doug taught in various schools in the valley including Mt. Prevost, Quamichan and George Bonnar. Come retirement Doug continued his education and love of teaching overseas. He and Christa enjoyed the next 20 years in South East Asia. In 2002 at the age of 74 Doug earned his PHD in Philosophy while living in Chang Mai, Thailand.

Doug was well known in the community not only as a teacher but as an avid sportsman. Any weekend he could be found at the field coaching youth soccer or playing rugby.

Doug will be dearly missed by his large loving family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 3:00 PM at H. W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre, 5285 Polkey Road, Duncan, BC.

Sorry to miss the Celebration of Life as I only learned of this tonight. Doug was a fine citizen and friend and I enjoyed working with Doug and Christa in political matters. I am saddened by his loss but recognize that he lived a very full and productive life. My deepest condolences to Christa and the family.

Relation: from school

Although Doug never actually taught me (I believe he was vice principle) he had a special way in dealing with teens weather problematic or not. This created a great amount of respect among the students as I remember. Was a fine man and had a great life, sorry for your loss.

From: Janet Fullerton
Relation: OT at CDH

I mostly ever saw Doug when he was feeling the worst and yet he always had a kind word or funny quip when we would meet. I enjoyed our conversations and Dougs many stories. Christa i admired your cheerful determinedness and strength which enabled Doug to recover each time and return home. I have enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to know you both and am sorry that you are now apart. Take care. Janet
