Douglas Olson
November 13, 1946 - January 27, 2021
Tribute
Doug passed away unexpectedly at his home in Duncan BC on January 27, 2021. Doug was born on November 13, 1946 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and moved to BC in 1947. He is the only son of Myrtle (Olson) Israelson and adoptive father Harry Israelson.
Doug graduated from Abbotsford Senior Secondary School and went on to study at Simon Fraser University. Following a stint in the offices of the business world Doug transitioned to a more hands on career as a plumber and ended his working life as plumbing inspector with the City of North Vancouver.
Doug met and married the love of his life Linda Elaine Messerli on September 03, 1982 in Richmond BC, Canada. Doug and Linda enjoyed an active life style in Vancouver and Duncan BC where they retired. Doug was an avid golfer, boater and fisherman. On occasion he and several friends would charter fishing trips out of Port Renfrew in search of the elusive salmon. He and Linda both enjoyed golfing and were often seen on the greens of the Cowichan Golf Club were they were long time members.
Doug was a man of many talents – with a well-equipped workshop he produced beautiful hand-crafted furniture, cheerful garden whirligigs and nautical inspired Christmas decorations.
Doug is survived by his wife Linda and leaves behind dear friends who will mourn his passing. Although Linda’s struggle with dementia weighed heavily on Doug his devotion to her never wavered. Doug’s burden was lessened somewhat through regular contact and support from his cousin Bob, Linda’s cousin George and Doug’s special friend Dianne.
Doug will be cremated and interred in a private ceremony at Mountain View Cemetery in Duncan BC.
As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Linda and all the family. We have known Doug and Linda for upwards of 35 years. We met first in North Vancouver, Doug & Hugh worked for the City of North Vancouver, they golfed together and we socialized. We moved to Victoria and a couple of years later Doug & Linda moved to Duncan. We still visited and played golf and kept in touch. More recently we had been keeping in touch with Doug by phone as we did not want to risk passing the COVID virus. We will miss Doug and we are sure Linda will miss Doug in her own way.

I always enjoyed Doug and his wry sense of humor. He and Linda opened their home to me in both Vancouver and on the Island, they welcomed me as closer family then I am. Doug and Linda’s generosity provided many evenings enjoying a great meal (often with fresh caught seafood) and conversation in both BC and AB.

Roberta and I met Doug and Linda through The Cowichan Newcomers in 2006 and got together a few times before Linda ‘s failing health. I am so sad that Doug has passed on, but his abiding love for Linda never wavered and I firmly believe it lead to a broken heart. Rest in peace Doug.
