Tribute

Doug died peacefully after a short battle with cancer.  He bravely went through the treatments but was unable to survive the disease.  He is predeceased by his son and survived by his loving wife, mother and brothers as well as many family members and friends.  Special thanks go to Dr. Kerswell, Dr. Masuda, the doctors and staff at the Victoria Cancer Centre and the nurses and staff at Cowichan District Hospital.  Their support and care was exceptional.  A reception will follow at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cancer Society or a favourite charity.

H.W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Bill Calvert
Relation: Co-worker

Doug and I bumped into each other at various times and capacities during our careers at BC Ferries. He was an Engineer’s Engineer, with a wry disrespect for the vaguries of the BCF bureaucracy. I’ll miss him; gone too soon.

From: Stanley Logan
Relation: Co-worker

I am sorry for your loss, I worked with Doug on the Nimpkish out of Bella Coola. He had such a great knowledge of so many things. We used to try to stump him on so many subjects but he always had the answers easily at hand. Doug lit a interest in fly fishing for me and I was always asking for a hand and he would jump in and get me back on path with the issue. I have fond memories of our time spent plying the Central Coast on the Nimpkish and he will always be a large part of those times. He will be missed.

From: John Van Tol
Relation: Co-Worker

My sincerest condolences to Doug’s family and friends.
My last three years before my retirement was spent with Doug on the Central Coast aboard the Mighty Nimpkish as Doug would say. In that time I learned to appreciate him as a Marine Engineer a fellow fly fisherman and woodworker. Doug’s wit and humor will stay with me forever and as Doug pointed out that one does not arrive on the fly fishing scene until they own a bamboo fly rod like he had. Doug Thank you for making my life a little richer and more colorful. Thank You for being a great boss. I will never forget you. Rest in Peace brother.

Relation: Co-worker

I had the great privilege of working with Doug at various times over the years. He was always quick with a joke that would lighten any situation. Doug was a fine example of the classic Marine Engineer with great hands on skills. As just one example I remember him showing me a working steam engine that would fit in the palm of your hand, that he had made by hand.
Best wishes on your journey.

I too worked briefly opposite Doug on the Nimpkish. An old school engineer who always left you no surprises and everything in good order. The Marine Engineering fraternity has lost another good guy. My sincerest condolences to Doug’s family and friends.

We are very sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. He was an excellent shipmate and we all shared many laughs. He use to give me casting tips when we worked night shifts. There was quite a bit of fly line tangled on the deckhead of the main cardeck of the QPR! Wishing you calms seas and smooth sailing my friend.

Sincerest condolences to Doug’s family and friends. We sailed together for quite some time on the Queen of Prince Rupert. Doug was a pleasure to work with, a very talented engineer and “hobby” machinist who will be truly missed by all.

Relation: co-worker

Sad news, condolence to all those he leaves behind. Doug was more than a breath of fresh air on all the vessels he ran and kept safely operating. He will be missed.

From: Grant Oystensen and Maureen Tighe
Relation: BC Ferries at Prince Rupert.

Our deepest sympathy. Saying goodbye to someone we love is heartbreaking. May you find comfort in the special memories shared with Doug. We have fond memories of working with him for many years.
