Dorothy Joanne Allen (MacKinnon)

August 18, 1955 - December 6, 2025

Tribute

Joanne (Dorothy) Allen, née MacKinnon, passed away suddenly on December 6, 2025, in Duncan, British Columbia, shortly after a heart operation. Her passing was unexpected, and she left this world far too soon.

Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on August 18, 1955, Joanne was the daughter of the late Alvin and Joyce MacKinnon. She was predeceased by her brother, Kevin; and by her nephew Dale and her niece Crystal, beloved children of her sister Sandra. She is survived by her siblings: Sandra Lively of Harrietsfield, Nova Scotia; Brian MacKinnon of Kentville, Nova Scotia; and Christopher MacKinnon of Montreal, Quebec. She was a proud aunt to Sandra’s sons, John and Drew, and to Brian’s son, Nicholas.

Joanne worked as a waitress from the age of 16 and spent many years at Romeo’s, where she was known for her humour, her warmth, and the way she made everyone feel welcome. Her closest friend, Eialeen Ross, was a true constant in her life — a friendship marked by loyalty, laughter, and deep love. Joanne cherished her deeply.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of 38 years, Stu, who was her partner through everything and the great love of her life.

She is survived by her children:

Michael and his wife Tania of Riverview, New Brunswick

Melissa and her partner Adam of White Rock, British Columbia

Joanne adored her grandchildren — Riley, son of Melissa; and Peyton and Dylan, children of Michael. They were her pride, her joy, and her softest spot.

She is also lovingly remembered by her step-children:

Joel Allen and his wife Angela of Toronto, Ontario

Derek Allen and his wife Michelle of Victoria, British Columbia

Christa Allen of Ontario

Joanne was loyal, stubborn in all the best ways, endlessly loving, and fiercely protective of her family. She showed up for the people she cared about, no matter what. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, humour, and deep devotion that will be carried forward by everyone who loved her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, doctors, and staff at both Royal Jubilee Hospital and Cowichan District Hospital for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion they showed Joanne in her final days.

At Joanne’s request, there will be no formal service. Stu welcomes friends and loved ones to gather informally from time to time to remember Joanne and the beautiful person she was.

Loved Beyond Measure, Missed Every Day

For those wishing to honour her memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
