David William Stiles

November 5, 1939 - February 8, 2023

Tribute

It is with great sadness that the family of David Stiles, announce his passing at home, Wednesday, February 8, 2023.

Born in Brookdale, NS, he was a son of the late Clair and Margaret (Millar) Stiles.

David is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sheila (Stewart) Stiles; children, David (Sara), Brian (Darlene), Jocelyn (Wayne); six grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; siblings George (Loretta) and Wilma (Jim).

He was predeceased by his sisters; Marilyn (James), and Elizabeth, and his brother, Gordon (Donna).

David began his military career in Gagetown, NB and served for 15 years (1960-75). He was a member of the Black Watch and later joined the III PPCLI. He did a tour of duty in Cyprus as a peacekeeper and retired from the military in Victoria. Following his military service, David worked for Doman’s Forest Products, in Duncan, as a Millwright .

David enjoyed being outdoors, camping and fishing with his family and good friend “Gordy.” The fish caught on their fishing trips would be quickly smoked and shared with family and friends. David also enjoyed hanging out at the ‘garage’ with his buddies and Wednesday night visits to the Cowichan Valley Inn. David (Papa) dearly loved his grandchildren and found his time with them very precious.

Although life will never be the same without him, David instilled a love of life and a strong work ethic in his family. His legacy will live on for generations to come.

As per David’s wishes, there will not be a service and a private cremation has taken place.

Sheila and Family

I write to express to you and your family the sincere condolences of the Patricia’s on the passing of David Stiles. While his service was quite a time ago now, his start in Gagetown and then the re-alignment of the infantry corps in 1970-71 brought him to the PPCLI. We are glad that he had a wife who would stick by him for 62 years – that is a feat well earned.
The Regiment remembers David’s service, and the family I am sure are proud of that service. His name will be read in this year’s list of the lost when we read that out on November 11th, 2023 in the Sacred Space in Beechwood, the National Military Cemetery, Ottawa. His name will also be listed in the 2023 edition of the Patrician’s Last Post section, published in March 2024.

Thank you.
