HURST, David Bryan
born in Halifax NS May 07, 1943 to Lloyd George and Vivien Frances Hurst, David passed away peacefully in his sleep at home after a prolonged illness on Tuesday, July 21, 2009.
His spirit lives on in his wife Claudia”s heart & soul, as well as in the hearts of his mother, Vivien, & bro Peter in Nova Scotia, and his sons, Jonathan and Wesley, in Victoria. ”Granpa” David will also be missed by Claudia”s children and their families.
David was a 5th generation Canadian, a descendent of a long line of Maritime ship captains, was an expert on old cars, spent time on fishing boats in northern pacific waters as cook, and was known as ”puq spaal” (white raven) by those living on the Cowichan Reserve. He was a respected Pacific NW carver who had apprenticed under Frances Horne and passed his knowledge on to local youth. He also donated masks for raffle purposes to help youth go on field trips and to help Fred Rowland rebuild his home after it was destroyed in a fire. As an accomplished Cowichan and Contemporary Coast Salish artist, his work has been seen in The Nature Of Island Artists art shows.
Claudia wishes to thank the palliative care team for all of their help and allowing David to remain at home as well as Drs. Gee, Morris and Haw for their care as well as Harold Wallace for his help in this most difficult time.
