David Clay Strom

August 19, 1949 - October 17, 2022

Tribute

David Clay Strom passed away October 17, 2022 after a lengthy battle with cancer

David was born August 19, 1949 in Chemainus BC.

David was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, stepfather, and step grandfather and step great grandfather and a good friend to many.

He was predeceased by his father Anders in 1959, his mother Lillian in 1997, his brother Dale in 1997, and his brother Ivan in 2009.

He is survived by his loving wife Gloria Strom, who became the love of his life. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Rutherford (Dave) and their children Maya and Kinley and by his son Clayton (Alison) and their daughter Maria Rose.

He is survived by siblings Jon Strom (Solange), Andrea Callison (Wayne) Muriel Macham (Sandy) as well as their 15 children, his many nieces, and nephews.

He is also survived by 7 Step children Scott Stetsko (Irene), Trevor Stetsko (Elaine), Jennifer Nydahl (Erik) Trevor McKay (Doris), Shawna Erickson (Bryan), Terry McKay (Amanda), Shelly Hodgins (Brad) and 18  grandchildren and one great grandson.

What a legacy! In David’s own words he came from a large family and went on to have his own very large family that he was very proud of and supported him during his illness. David invented the term “blended family”!!

David graduated from high school in Chemainus in 1967 and the same year became a long shoreman and endured many years on the waterfront. Indeed, the people in this industry became his second family. David was involved with his union as a part time dispatcher for many years and went on to become a foreman and worked as a superintendent in many ports throughout BC. He was very active in community service as Kinsmen and the Pensioner group of the ILWU.

After retirement David and Gloria moved back to Vancouver Island and built a beautiful home in Maple Bay that they have enjoyed for the last 8 years.

Highlights of his life included extensive travels around the world. Following retirement David proudly took a landscape design course at The University of BC. One only must look at the gardens around his new house to see the knack he had for design and a green thumb. He never stopped working!

David was also an avid golfer and a lifelong lover of reading.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends

His life will be celebrated at a Memorial to be held at HW Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre, 5285 Polkey Road Duncan BC at 11 am on Saturday October 29, 2022.  Refreshments will be served. A gathering of friends and family will convene at the Eagles Hall at 2965 Boys Road following the service.

Gloria and the family want to express our heartfelt thanks for all the care given David by the doctors and nurses.
