Daphne Margarete Chatterton (Dougan) nee Cox
February 19, 1926 – November 4, 2014
Daphne was born in Duncan BC to Duncan (Cornwall UK) and Daisy (Kent UK) Cox and was one of eight children. Predeceased by first husband Charles Dougan, sisters Gwen Read and Beverly Uzzell; brothers Bill, Gordon, Doug and Brick. Survived by husband Kenneth Chatterton, son James Dougan, daughters Nancy Bennett (Allan Pollard) and Sandra
Murtough (Marc), stepsons Allan (Joan) and Lindsay Chatterton, ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, brother Jim (Ruth) Cox, brother-in-law Dave (Loll) Dougan and sisters-in-law, Roma Cox and Jean Hoover, plus numerous nephews and nieces.
Daphne spent her growing-up years in the Valley and was schooled at Cowichan Station. She married at seventeen and spent the first fifteen years of marriage in the Dougan/Cox logging camp on Texada Island, moving later with her family to Cobble Hill where she spent the majority of her life. In 1974 she went to work at Hill’s Canoe Store as a clerk, postmistress, and later as manager until her retirement in 1991.
After losing Charlie in 1989, she went on to marry Kenneth Chatterton in 1993 and together they enjoyed five great years of companionship, laughter and travel before her major stroke in 1998. He has been a continued source of strength, and a wonderful husband to her through her remaining years. Daphne was remarkable, and had an upbeat spirit, managing her stroke beautifully and with humour. She spent the last fourteen years as a resident of Cairnsmore Extended Care in Duncan where she was happy, well cared for, and much loved by staff, her family, and her community. Her presence will be greatly missed.
A memorial tea for all will be held at Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cobble Hill on Saturday November 15th at 2:00 pm.
Anyone wishing to could donate to Cairnsmore Place-Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. www.cdhfoundation.org/cairnsmore.shtml

When I was growing up, my cousin Sandra and I were friends. Sandra is only about a month older than me. Daphne and Charlie were lovely people…I used to think of them as Auntie and Uncle. Daphne was always a very busy and happy lady. Sandra used to wear lovely hand knit sweater sets….I remember her as having worn kilts….also nice oxfords. I remember wearing “poufy” girlie dresses. This was all back in the day when girls were expected to wear dresses and skirts to school….this didn’t change till I was in High School. Daphne, you will be missed by many people. Dream on you sweet and wonderful cousin. Judy.

Relation: from Cairnsmore
When I saw Daphne’s photo I knew I knew her but could not place where from. Then the obit mentioned Cairnsmore. For over a year I was an almost daily visitor at Cairnsmore and I got to know Daphne early on. I was often worried or feeling down as I went into or out of the building but Daphne and her hello from her wheelchair always cheered me up. She had great spirit to her and I enjoyed our short chats. I’m sorry for your loss – I trust she is at peace now. Lesley
