Cory Champoux

August 3, 1966 - February 15, 2012

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden accidental passing of Cory Champoux, devoted husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. Cory is survived by his wife Evelyn Koops, son’s Dustin and Jared Champoux, parents Evelyne and Harold Champoux, brothers Colin (Joann) and Bret (Annette), nieces Kaitlyn Champoux and Madyson Jack, mother and father in-law Jeannette and Gerrit Koops, brother-in-law Rich Koops, very close friends, Christine Cairns and Werner Hahner, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cory was born in Terrace, British Columbia but grew up in the south end of the Cowichan Valley. His love of sports began early, playing minor hockey and baseball in Mill Bay. He met the love of his life, Evelyn, in 1990 while playing for the same fastball team, the Psychos.
Cory followed Evelyn’s radio career to Terrace and Peace River, eventually moving back to the island in 2000. He was employed at the Duncan Country Grocer and later at Duncan Thrifty Foods where he leaves behind many dear friends and co-workers.
Cory had an amazing sense of humour and was known for his love of Monty Python, SNL, movies, books, and beer. He was an avid lover of sports including baseball, NFL and College Basketball. He was an awesome cook and would often be found in the kitchen cooking or on the patio bbqueing new recipes that he had seen on cooking shows such as his favourite Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Cory was a big kid when it came to roller coasters! On their family vacation in 2009 to Anaheim, he got to ride the best roller coaster ever! at Magic Mountain. Recently, when the family was planning a trip to Hawaii, Cory’s response was “There’s no roller coasters in Hawaii!” However, the true loves of his life were his wife Evelyn and his fantastic sons, Dustin and Jared.
Cory recently became active and joined a gym and would often be seen walking around his neighborhood and to and from work. He was also closely involved with his sons’ sports, either coaching baseball or helping out with the basketball team or with many of the team’s fundraisers.
A Celebration of Cory’s Life will be held Sunday, March 4th, 2012 at 1pm at the Crofton Hall, 1681 Robert Rd, Crofton. Refreshments to follow at the Crofton Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Duncan Minor Baseball Association, Mid Island Mustangs Baseball Club, Duncan Junior Basketball Association or Cowichan T-Birds Basketball Club.
“If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. If mountains crumbled to the sea, there would still be you and me”

We hadn’t seen Cory for so many years but it feels like only yesterday when we first met him. I know Evelyn pretty much fell in love at first sight. Cory, you will be missed by all who have known you and Evelyn, Dustin and Jared you will be in our prayers. We would love to come to Duncan to celebrate Cory’s life but we will have to do it here in Calgary, Alberta. xoxoxoxoxo

It seems like I always remember Corey at Halloween. When Jared was younger, he would invite all his friends to meet at their house, (at that time in Cobble Hill) prior to trick or treating. The excitement among the young boys was explosive but Corey was always a calm, grounded person. Evelyn would usually get the boys ready into their costumes and then head off to work and Corey and the mums would escort the boys around. Corey was so centered and calm, it was like a breath of fresh air. I don’t think a Halloween goes by that I don’t remember those nite, walking/running around Cobble Hill in the dark: the boys, Corey and the mums!!!
