Colin Wilkinson

January 7, 1949 - August 23, 2013

With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Colin Wilkinson. Born in Dervock, near Bushmills, County Antrim, Ireland, on January 7, 1949, Colin leaves behind his wife Maura, step-children Ciara and Kevin, and his family in Ireland.

Colin left Ireland when he was 16 ½ and lived in West Yorkshire until the late eighties, at which time he moved to B.C. He met Maura, and they became partners, not only in life but in business. Colin’s other great love was their beloved downtown store, The Celtic Connection, owned and operated by both Colin and Maura. Sadly, he will not get to continue his dream and be here for the success of the business. With his keen sense of humour and twinkling blue eyes, he could entertain us with many a story. He was loved by many and will be sadly missed.  Irish eyes are smiling down on us all.

We wish to pass on our sincere thanks to the paramedics who attended Colin and did everything in their power to bring him back to us. We will be forever grateful.  A very special thanks to all our friends who have been an incredible source of comfort and consolation and a special nod to Colin’s family in Ireland who cannot be here at this sad time.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31st, 2013 at HW Wallace Funeral Home, 5285 Polkey Road, Duncan BC, at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at the Brigantine Pub in Maple Bay.  Please join us in giving Colin the send-off he would have dearly loved to be part of.  Online condolences may be offered at www.hwwallacecbc.com

Dear Maura I am so sorry to hear about Colin’s death. Your great personal qualities will get you through but not unscathed. Please take care of yourself.

To Maura and family

Our deepest condolences are sent to you and all the family at this very sad time. We knew Colin from when we were all very good friends and neighbours living in East Morton, West Yorkshire, England. Colin emigrated to Canada from our house! He had been staying with us for some weeks after they sold the house and we have some great memoires, (and sad ones too) of this time. And we all travelled down to London to put them on the plane for the new life in Canada. Of course that was not the end, we have been to Canada a few times since and have had some good times together. The last time was when I (Hilary) visited Colin in Duncan some years back and saw what a nice home he had made for himself up there in Duncan.
You will be in our thoughts on August 31st at 1.30pm, and if there is a drink available (as we will be on a plane to America at the time you will be at the Brigantine Pub) we will drink a toast to him to send him on his way!

Colin will be sorely missed. Always enjoyed coming into your shop.and enjoyed the banter. You where a prince of a fellow, very privildged to have known you. God Bless

From: Sharon Jackson
Relation: Friend of both Colin and Maura

This is a horrible shock to so many of us. Colin was such a live wire and a funny, funny man. He had firm convictions and strong ideas, which is why I liked him so much.

I used to drop by the shop a couple of times a week and shoot the breeze. Downtown Duncan is a little less fun for me now.

But Maura, I will always be your friend, I have been through something similar and I hope we can hang out and walk together.

From: Deborah Burns
Relation: Co-worker of his wife Maura

I will not be able to attend but my thoughts and prayers are with you. Whenever I think of you I will always see Colin’s smiling face. He definitely was a blessing to all.

Relation: Friend and one of his bartenders

So very sorry to hear of your great loss Maura. Colin was definately one of a kind. He always made me laugh, even if his jokes were a groaner. He loved to embarrass me about the time he had to drive me home from Jody’s stag in Crofton and I was too soussed to tell him where I lived. A bit of an exageration on his part. He will be greatly missed for a long time to come. Our heart goes out to you and your families. Love Virg.

From: CVI Station Pub
Relation: Our longtime friend and patron

Maura, we at the CVI wish to express our deepest condolences to you and both of your families for the loss of Colin. He was one of our greatest patrons. His laughter and jokes and sharp wit will be greatly missed. He leaves a great void at our pub. Love from all the staff at the CVI .

From: Ron & Ellen Bradshaw
Relation: friend

We enjoyed Colin very much. We first met him when he was living at the Westwind Apartment and making his delicious soda bread. We enjoyed his baking which we bought at the Farmer’s Market and were very happy to meet Maura and very happy to see his progress at the Celtic Connection. Ron and Colin loved to see who could get the best insults on our Saturday morning visits to the market. He will be missed. Our sympathy to the family. Sincerely, the Bradshaws
