Cherry Elizabeth (Betty) Gunnlaugson born October 17, 1923 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Frederick and Doris Birdsall – the second of seven children -five brothers Ivor (Bunty), Rick (Mev), Bill (Verna), Ken, Phil (Margaret) Birdsall of Vancouver and one sister – Joan Doubleday (Lorne) of Kamloops. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Lockhart, her mother, father and brothers Ivor, Rick and Bill. She is survived by her six children Jo-Ann Slingerland (Glen), Alan Gunnlaugson (Cecilia Laranjo), Susan Mottahedeh (Soheyl), Chris Gunnlaugson (Norma) , Karen Thom (Brian), James Gunnlaugson (Ginger Thomas) and 13 grandchildren (her “baker’s dozen”): Jared, Brie and Tai Slingerland, Greg and Danielle Marwick, Bradley, Darcy, Laura and Shawn Gunnlaugson, Jessica and Geoffrey Thom, Michelle and Dwight Gunnlaugson. She passed away peacefully on April 14, 2009 in Duncan, B.C. Betty died as she lived with courage and hope and in the embrace of family and faith. Her funeral was held in Duncan on April 18, 2009. I am glad to have met such a wonderful women, who was not just a client but a friend as well. I’ve been working with Home Support for just about 5 years now and it’s not very often that you meet someone that touches your heart as she has touched mine. She was an incredible women and will be greatly missed.
