Cherreine Elizabeth Painter

December 24, 1945 - December 4, 2023

Tribute

Cherreine Elizabeth Painter (neé Chamberlin), beloved wife, Mum and Grandma died unexpectedly on December 4th.

Cheri, as she was known to her friends, was born in Saltaire B.C. to Ray and Vivian Chamberlin. She had three siblings: Ray Cliff (Phylis), Cathy (Bruce) and Craig (Roni). An accomplished basketball player, she put that aside when she met her sweetheart, Dave Painter and started a family.

She was soon considered another sibling amongst Dave’s brothers and sisters: Carole (deceased) Audrey (Geoff), Jim (Jennifer), Gayle (Steve), Darlene (Trevor), and Shirley.

When her two girls were old enough, she went to work – first at the RediKwik Cafe in Duncan and then later at the local BC Tel office where she worked until her retirement.
Vibrant and social, Cheri was a Christmas Eve baby and every year friends and family would join in her birthday celebration with gifts, games and laughter. She loved this season and invariably had her Christmas shopping done, her cookies baked and famous fruit cakes marinating – ready to share with anyone who dropped in.

As much as she loved the winter holidays, Cheri was a sunshine gal. For this reason, Cheri and Dave travelled to Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and spent many winters in southern California. Cheri also travelled across Canada with Dave and to the UK with her daughters. In the summer months at their home in Duncan, Cheri could be seen working in the flower garden or driving her lawn mower while Dave tended to his vegetable garden and fruit trees. Cheri and Dave recently celebrated an astonishing 60 years of marriage, surrounded by family and friends.
Cheri’s adventurous nature drew her to many pastimes and activities throughout her life. She was a Girl Guide leader, a line dancer, a golfer, a curler and a quilter.

Mum was amazing. An avid reader, she savoured a good English mystery and any home renovation show. But she loved her family most of all and always let us know through words or actions. The quilts that she enjoyed entering into the Cowichan Exhibition were typically gifted to a friend or a family member with their name embroidered on it.

Bereft in her absence is Cheri’s husband, Dave Painter, daughters Brenda and Cheryl, son-in-law Nigel and two cherished grandkids, Spencer and Austin Yonge. Additionally, there are many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many loving friends mourning her loss. Our beautiful, fierce wife and Mum will be deeply missed. We will love her forever.
As per Cheri’s wishes there will be a celebration of life at a future date. To honour her memory please savour life, bake often and create.

She was made of stardust, as we all are, but she shone with it.

Dave, Brenda, and Cheryl, I was so sorry to hear about dear Cheri and I send you my heartfelt love at this time of such a difficult and sudden loss. My brother Robert Leagh (California) and I (Toronto) are her first cousins; her Uncle Bob (brother to her mother Vivian Chamberlin) was our father. One of my earliest memories was of my brother and I as children visiting “Auntie Viv” and cousins Ray, Cathi, Cheri, and Craig, all of us laughing and jumping on the rocks at the beautiful Gibsons shoreline–a treasured memory. Cheri, Cathi and I kept up our Christmas newsy letters until just a year ago. She will be missed by so many; she was a lovely person.
