Charles Richard Ayers

Tribute

In Loving Memory of Charles Richard Ayers (1944–2026)

Charles Richard Ayers lived a life defined by curiosity, courage, and motion through the air, across the sea, and always toward new horizons.

Born on September 15, 1944, in Montreal during the final year of World War II, Charles entered the world already shaped by aviation. His father, Roland, served as an RAF instructor, and flying was woven into the fabric of Charles’s early life. After the war, the family returned to England, where Charles excelled academically and developed a deep fascination with flight.

By his late teens, Charles was already training as a pilot. At just 19 years old, he became one of the youngest commercial jet pilots of his time, beginning a remarkable aviation career that would span decades. He flew for BEA and later Canadian Pacific Airlines and Canadian Airlines (which would later become Air Canada) logging approximately 18,000 flight hours across eight commercial aircraft types. His career took him across Europe, North America, Asia, South America, and the Pacific, including transcontinental, polar, and international routes.

Yet flying was only one of his great passions.

Charles was equally drawn to the sea. He became an accomplished sailor, navigating the waters of the Pacific Northwest, the Inside Passage, and beyond. He undertook bold voyages, including single-handed sailing adventures, Atlantic and Pacific crossings, and extended coastal explorations. Sailing was never just recreation for Charles. It was a way of understanding the world, testing himself, and embracing freedom.

After retiring from commercial aviation in 2002, Charles settled in Cowichan Bay, where he continued to live fully and with intention. He remained active in the community, serving as President of his strata council for many years, mentoring others, and embracing family life with warmth and generosity.

Another unexpected passion blossomed later in life. Tennis. Charles became deeply involved with the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club, serving as President, tournament organizer, and competitor. Remarkably, he rose into the top rankings in British Columbia for seniors tennis in multiple age categories, winning several titles well into his seventies.

Charles found great satisfaction in helping others and giving back to his community whenever he could. He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, partner, and friend, thoughtful, principled, curious, and quietly adventurous. Whether watching floatplanes skim across Cowichan Bay from his kitchen table or observing the trumpeter swans that gathered along the shore, he remained someone who lived forward, with eyes open and spirit engaged.

He is survived by his daughter Glaucia and his grandchildren Isaac, Jussara, Xzavier, and Jonisah.

He will also be missed by his devoted companion Baloo, who brought great comfort, companionship, and purpose to his days.

Charles’s life reminds us that curiosity does not fade with age, that reinvention is always possible, and that a life well lived is one that keeps moving, learning, loving, and exploring.

A celebration of life will be held on March 28, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, 3515 Telegraph Road, Cobble Hill, British Columbia. Light refreshments will be served.

From: Linda Hill
Relation: Family member

I am honoured to have flown with Charles on our co-grandparenting magic carpet for the past 13 years (ever since we met on the day Jussara was born and Glaucia dubbed me and John “Grandma Linda Lou and Papa John”). With Charles at the helm, we have touched down on many magic kingdoms for adventure after adventure – always with lots of fun to be had, shenanigans to get up to, good food to eat, good cheer to share, good wine to drink, partying to make us hearty, running around to keep us young, great performances to watch, tall tales to tell, old and new songs to sing along with, so many surprises, and so much friendship to celebrate!!!!!

From: Ken Blatherwick
Relation: I knew him through the SCLTC.

Charles will be missed. My memory of him is how he schooled me on how to play tennis on grass, yet be so gracious as well. Charles, I did learn the lessons you taught me that day and I am very grateful.

From: Steve Fortin
Relation: Tennis partner

Charles, sorry you had to leave us so soon. You will be sorely missed by your family and friends. Rest in peace my friend.

From: Jill Jones
Relation: A neighbor .

Charles was a good neighbor to me when I moved to Mariner Ridge in 2015. In the following year my son left the family dog, Bruce, in my care when they moved to Malawi. Charles met Bruce and we all became friends so much so that Charles offered to take him for walks if needed. I soon took him up on the offer when I was unwell. There walks together were a success, they got on well and their friendship developed , Bruce staying with Charles when I was away one weekend and at another time driving in the middle of the night down to Langford when Bruce was rushed down for major surgery . Bruce had the same coloring as Balloo but he had shorter legs and was not so strong . I will remember Charles with warm feelings. A kind man. A good friend.

Relation: Through Linda and Glaucia.

To Glaucia, Isaac, Jussara, Xzavier, and Jonisah. What a life your grandfather lived. I’m so glad to have experienced Thursday dinner with all of you. Charles was so proud of his family and looked for opportunities to engage with each of you in his calm loving manner. You have kept him busy over the years as he followed your activities and celebrated birthdays, school events and holidays. He was blessed as a father, grandfather and great grandfather, and you were cherished. Thinking of you as you help each other with love and strength. Guida

From: Edward David Alder
Relation: Big Brother's of Canada

It is with tears streaming down my face that I write of the saddening news of Charles’ passing. I met “Chuck” when he was just 29, and I just 7 years old, the son of a divorced and absent father, -also a pilot. Big Brothers of Canada literally hit a home run for us! We became quick close friends and remained that way for a lifetime. While we lost touch after both he began raising Glaucia and I began raising my own family, I cherished the connection, and the mentorship that our relationship gave me. Charles was not just, “like a father” to me, he more than filled that role 110%. The very fond memories that I will carry with me are vivid, strong and some of the best times of my life. My reconnection with Charles came very recently, but of course it seemed immediately that no time had passed since the last meeting, though 30 years had passed. My emotions are running highly at this time, I would like to say more but there is really nothing I can put into words to fully describe how much my life was changed for the better by his presence in it. That is all I will write for now, however soon I may add some of the great memories we have had in the form of pictures added to this condolence message. Thank you Chuck, you will be forever missed and loved. -Eddy.
