Charles Jeffrey Abbott

January 13, 1953 - November 29, 2019

Tribute

A bright light was taken from us too soon on November 29, 2019. Jeff was friend to many, quick with a story or joke, and active in community.

Jeff was born in Bolton, England and immigrated with his parents Ken & Betty to Ajax, Ontario in December 1963. In 1973 Jeff & his “Brother” Jim hitchhiked across Canada. He settled in sunny Youbou realizing he’d found “God’s Country”. Jeff married his “Honeybun” Lorraine in 1976 and in 1980 his “#1 Daughter” Nicole was born.

Jeff was an active volunteer in the Cowichan Valley. He was on the CVRD area planning committee for many years. He was a member of the Youbou Fire Rescue as a first responder for over 26 years. He received a Governor General Fire Services exemplary medal for 20 years of service. He was most proud of being the auctioneer for 35+ years at the annual Mesachie Lake Muscular Dystrophy ball tournament which rose over $928,000. He served as Exalted Ruler of Lake Cowichan BPO Elks where in 1991 he proposed the Tomorrow Run with marathoner Al Howie. The Run raised over half a million dollars for the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children with Special Needs. He was chairmen of Lake Days inventing the Boom Chain Toss event. Jeff was honoured to be named 1991’s Citizen of the year.

My Daddy O loved to have a glass of his home made wine with whoever would dare, play the harmonica and sing, cook and entertain. He lived to laugh, love and make others happy, even during his own battle with cancer. Whether you knew him as a logger with a real estate license, the Reverend Abbott or unofficial Mayor of Youbou, Dad was sure to leave an impression.

Jeff is predeceased by his pop Ken in 2018. He is survived by his mum Betty, his wife of 43 years, Lorraine, daughter Nicole, favourite son-in-law Matt, and lifelong best friend/brother Jim. Other family include Diane; Ken & Kathy, Warren, Brent; June & Kevin, Jana & Keith, Ali & Derek, a great-niece and great nephews; his one cousin Janet, (Graeme, Sian and Laura) and other relatives in England.

The family would like to thank the home care aids, nurses and care aids of 3rd floor CDH for the wonderful care they provided for Jeff.  Thank you everyone for your love and kind thoughts, food and flowers.

Jeff had many friends and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
