Carol-Ann May Demers
February 16, 1962 - October 3, 2024
Tribute
Carol passed away peacefully at Cowichan Hospice House on Oct. 3, after a tough battle with cancer. Carol was a very strong and vibrant person; a fighter until the very end. Carol is survived by her parents, Ron and Marilyn Demers; daughters, Danielle (Joel) Duifhuis and Vanessa (Jeff) Caddell; son, Alex Martel; grandchildren, Amaya, Isaiah, Nehemiah, Cora and Declan and many friends. Carol is predeceased by her brother, Daniel Demers.
Carol was born and raised in Victoria, BC. Later, she moved to Shawnigan Lake and raised three children. Carol enjoyed working and keeping busy. She spent many years as a Medical Office Assistant and Pharmacy Assistant. Our mom moved to Pender Island in 2010, where she resided for 10 years. We were very grateful that she decided to move back to the Cowichan Valley, as she was able to spend more time with her grandchildren. As her health declined, she was no longer able to work and needed to find new hobbies to keep her busy. She enjoyed park play dates with her grandchildren, thrift store shopping with friends, gardening and knitting. Mom was always looking for a great bargain or a new project to DIY.
We are devastated to lose our mom at such a young age, but we are grateful for the tremendous, loving care she received at Cowichan Hospice House. Mom persevered through her health issues with great strength and dignity. Her determination and hope were an inspiration to those around her. Mom, you will always be remembered by your sense of style. You always wanted to look your best. Your outfits and accessories were carefully chosen, even if it was to simply run errands.
Mom, you will be missed forever. You are strong, you are beautiful, you are loved!
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to BC Cancer Society or Cowichan Hospice Hospital. Thank you!

Relation: She was my friend and neighbour
In Loving Memory of Carol
My name is Ramona White, and I had the privilege of living next to Carol in
Shawnigan Lake. As a single mom with two kids, I was fortunate to have her as a
neighbor and friend. Carol, also a single mom, and her three beautiful children,
together we formed a strong camaraderie.
We shared countless adventures, laughter, and dinners. I remember the winter of
’96 when we were supposed to take the kids to Mount Washington, only to wake
up to a massive snowstorm. Instead of being disappointed, we embraced the
moment. We spent the day shoveling snow off our roofs, and when we finished,
we helped the older residents in our park. What started as a chore turned into a
joyous day filled with laughter, and we were generously rewarded with all forms
of alcohol—a testament to the fun we had together.
Carol had a remarkable spirit. Her beautiful smile and infectious laughter are
memories I cherish. She was determined, firm, kind, and loving—qualities that
made her an amazing mother to her children. I have not seen Carol for quite some
time, but I know she would be thriving, surrounded by her children and
grandchildren.
Life, in all its complexities, was exactly what it was meant to be for Carol and her
family. Those were truly special times for me and my kids, and I know she will be
deeply missed by so many.
