Brendan passed away after an illness in the Edmonton University Hospital, Alberta, where he had resided for the last 10 years. Born in the Cowichan Valley, Brendan was predeceased by his parents Dennis and Moira Gaunt, brothers Sean and Paul, and survived by his daughter Shauna, her mother Julie, and brother Eamon.

Brendan was educated at Queen of Angels, Quamichan Junior Secondary and Cowichan Senior Secondary where he graduated in 1983. Well known amongst his peers for his generosity and humour, Brendan excelled in speech arts under the supervision of Mrs. Duckworth and obtained the Silver Medal Award (Royal Conservatory Music, University of Toronto) in 1979. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, particularly basketball under coach Keith Robertson of the Quamichan Totems, and selected for the Vancouver Island All-Star team. After graduation Brendan held a variety of jobs while attending night school before attending the University of Victoria where he obtained his law degree in 2001.

After being called to the bar, Brendan practiced criminal law in Iqaluit and Yellow Knife before transferring to the Department of Justice of Canada and subsequently the Alberta Department of Justice in Edmonton, Alberta.

My deepest condolences to Brendan’s family and friends. I worked with Brendan in the Crown’s office for 9 years. He was always friendly, diligent, and someone to look up to as a lawyer. He will be missed.

From: Robin Douglas
Relation: We were co-workers.

My sincerest condolences to Brendan’s family and friends in the wake of his passing. I had the pleasure of working with Brendan for a number of years at the Crown’s office in Edmonton. He was always kind regardless of how stressful things got in the office. I enjoyed many conversations with him whenever I stopped by his office, and when he would stop by my desk. There were many times throughout the years that Brendan would visit my desk just to see how I was doing. He was always very professional, kind, caring and compassionate. I always knew that when he inquired as to how I was doing that he genuinely cared and was interested in my responses. I cannot say enough how kind and gentle a man Brendan was. I’ve thought of him often once he left the Crown’s office and wondered how he was doing; it is my great sadness that we didn’t keep in touch. All of my memories of Brendan are good and happy memories. His greatest love was his daughter, Shauna, and he would always spoke of her with a father’s heartfelt devotion, love and pride. I will cherish my memories of Brendan. He personified genuine warmth, kindness and compassion. His passing comes as a great shock and a huge wave of sadness. Brendan was truly a kind, intelligent and interesting man. I am better for having known him. I truly miss my work friend and am greatly saddened by his passing. My love and hugs to Brendan’s family and friends as they journey through this very painful time in their lives.

I am so sorry to hear of Brendan’s passing. He was one of my all time favourite students at Cowichan Secondary. Brendan had a great sense of humour and was always smiling. I got a lot of enjoyment from teaching him. Brendan always managed to leave me smiling.

Brendan will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences on his passing.

I’m surprised and saddened to hear about Brendan’s sudden passing. When Brendan and I would work on opposite sides of the table, he was fair in his approach to criminal justice, open-minded about his positions, and firm in upholding his duties as Crown counsel. My sincerest condolences to Brendan’s family and close friends, who no doubt helped shape this fine gentleman the rest of us will be privileged to remember.

Brendan was a gentle soul, a lovely, friendly coworker. Condolences to family and friends. Sad to hear of his illness, let alone his passing.

From: Laura Marr
Relation: Colleague

I am so sorry to hear of Brendan’s passing. Brendan was a colleague at AB Justice, and we started in Edmonton around the same time. Brendan was always engaged with his colleagues; good for a laugh and a bit of advice, and a great conversation. We talked a lot about the law, but even more about our kids, and I remember the smile that would draw on Brendan’s when he would talk about his daughter. My sincere condolences to his family. I hope memories of Brendan bring some solace in the loss.

From: Zeta Lay
Relation: Became friends while studying at UVIC.

I am saddened to discover Brendan is no longer living. He has been on my mind and had decided I better track him down this morning as it had been too long since we connected. I will forever remember his laugh. My sincerest condolences to his family.
