Beverley (nee Aitken) Laverne Berkey

December 23, 1935 - August 4, 2020

Tribute

Bev passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 4, 2020 at the age of 84.  Bev is survived by her three children: Karen (Adrian), Bruce (Sharon) and Cindy (Ian) and four grandchildren, Alana (Allen), Zoe (Simon), Stephanie and Kaylee plus two great grandchildren, Ryder and Riley.

Bev grew up at Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island where her parents, Archie and Verna Aitken, owned the local grocery store for many years (Aitken & Fraser).  A graduate of Cowichan Senior Secondary, Bev went on to become a teacher in the Cowichan Valley and taught in many of the local elementary schools over the course of her career.

Upon retirement, she enjoyed the life of a snow bird spending the winter months in a place called Happy Trails in Surprise, Arizona.  In 2014, her health started to fail which made her winters in the states no longer possible.   She kept active through the Duncan Senior’s Center and enjoyed Friday night socials with her friends at the Legion.  Bev lived on her own right up until the end spending much of her time working in her yard.  She loved to garden and always had a vegetable garden in the summer that could feed the neighbourhood.  Mom’s vegetable garden is still going strong and feeding her neighbours even after she has passed.

Family was always a big part of mom’s life. She was Mom, Nana and “GG” (Great Grandma). She hit every dance recital, sports event and concert in support of the ones she loved.  Mom you did well in raising us all, and you will be missed.

From: Cathy Wagner
Relation: friend thru shuffleboard

Your mom always brought laughter, giggles, and fun when we played shuffleboard. No matter if she was having a bad day, or not feeling well, she always made time for us to listen, just listen. We were having a lot of issues with our son’s drug abuse and it was your mom’s positive attitude and words that keep us going. When we heard tonight your mom passed, both my husband, Cecil, and I were in total shock. Thank you, all of you for sharing just a little bit of your mom, she WAS a special lady.
