Barry Lockwood
June 10, 1947 - November 6, 2018
Tribute
Barry Lockwood was born, with his twin brother Neil, On June 10th 1947 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to Stanley and Gertie Lockwood, to the temporary dismay of their big sister, Pat. She got over it and became a best friend.
They were raised together in close community with all the family, many of whom continued the centuries-old family trade of horticulture, floriculture and agriculture. Barry grew up in post-war days when everything was grey… he wanted to bring colour and beauty to peoples’ lives, and worked his way through college funded by his egg sales, eventually up to his Master’s in Horticulture.
At a college dance, he met this cute girl. Her name was Janice, and they were smitten; he coached football and taught growing methods, and she got her Teaching Degree. They married and had a couple of pretty fabulous children—Katrina and James.
Barry was a visionary always, creating and building wherever he went, and leading naturally with a heart full of love. After managing and building nurseries in England, they took a leap of faith and started a big adventure in Canada, where they grew a new nursery from the roots up, raised their kids, and led by example a life of faith and love within the church community and with everyone they met.
Barry was the most humble and sparkling, fun-loving and adventurous, passionate and loyal and loving man you could know… when he saw you his face would light up because you were exactly who he wanted to see. He would share with you, offer wisdom, listen, laugh, teach, give, and plan with excitement the next wonderful thing to do or build. He helped whomever needed it and never judged, showing compassion and kindness without reservation.
The people of New Life Community Church, Duncan Pentecostal, Cowichan Green Community, the Cow-Op, Duncan and Esquimalt Farmers’ Markets, and the BCEgg board and wider industry will miss his knowledge and leadership, and so many more also will miss him as a friend. Barry was immensely grateful for the wonderful care he received from everyone at Cowichan District Hospital and Victoria General Hospital, and from his doctors, surgeons, and the community and palliative care teams.
He built Lockwood Farms with his son James and daughter-in-law Cammy, and today they continue building their dream farm in Cobble Hill with their children Keighley and Jayce. Along with them, his loving wife Janice, daughter Katrina (Mills), and her husband Luke and children Ethan, Owen, Sophie and Milo will miss him enormously, but we are committed to striving to model in our lives the words which describe him so well: To live without fear, and love without judgment.
Barry was a cherished family man, Master Horticulturist, poultry and produce farmer, and community leader, who returned to God after battling bladder cancer for four short months. He was at peace and had no bucket list… but his wishes were clear. In addition to his legacy through his family and farm, his wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made that would benefit the BCCA in Victoria which has helped himself and also his incredible wife, Jan.
See link below and on FB Lockwood Farms and HW Wallace.
Barry’s gentleness and example changed many hearts and lives, and show how each person, by showing love and kindness, can indeed change a life, a family, a community. He was an uncomplicated man who loved like Jesus did, and it changed the world. If you knew him and this was true in your life or the life of someone you know, please write just a few words, a phrase, or a sentence, to tell us how. We will build his Eulogy from the hearts of those whom he has loved. A “Going Away Party” Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Friday November 16th at New Life Community Church in Duncan.
As was Barry’s way… absolutely everyone is loved and welcome.

Relation: A friend and leader in my church
Dear ones of the Lockwood family. I was heartbroken to hear of Barry’s illness and passing.
I am holding the family in prayer for the deep touch of the Holy Spirit in this time of great pain and grief.
I have always had such huge respect for the way Barry lived in the world, his leadership in the church, his great kindness and the huge compassionate heart he had for people. Barry, has touched so many lives! I know you will all continue his legacy of love and generosity to the world around you.
Oh my dear Jan, I am so deeply sorry…… please know how much you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I am just so heartbroken for all of you…. my heart and tears are with you.
When I think of Barry, these are words phrases that come to mind. Barry was….
* A man after God’s own heart
* A man of great wisdom
* full of love and generosity
* so loving that that there was no room for judgement, ever
* a man who lived and breathed and shared his great and incredible love of Jesus, and through this blessed so many people
* so solid and kind-hearted and trustworthy
* a natural encourager
* the hands and feet and heart of Jesus in the world
The last time I saw Barry was back in June at George Brewster’s Birthday party. At that time, he spoke encouraging and affirming words to me about continuing to pursue the building of a new counselling practice in Comox. His genuine and sincere affirmation went deep for me and I have since reopened my practice. His words were like a deep, refreshing drink at a time of great pain and discouragement.
I also have a treasured memory of when I was baptized at the church 8 years ago. Barry came to greet me and bless me with such genuine, sparkling joy in his eyes, and blessed me with his amazing smile.
Amongst others, I think of Micah 6:8 when I think of Barry.
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
He has done this every day of his life, and so much more.
My heart and prayers are with you all….
Love in Him,
Carla
