Barbara Georgina Gibson-Dutton

September 7, 1936 - February 18, 2021

Tribute

In Duncan, BC, on Thursday, February 18th, 2021, Barbara Georgina Gibson-Dutton, loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother, passed away at the age of 84.

Barbara was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 7th, 1936, to Georgina Grey and Alexander Kay Gibson, into a family that would include brothers Rolland and Wesley and sister Ellen. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Donald, her two sons, Scott (Catherine) and Brent (Gogae), and grandchildren Taryn, Cameron, Olivia and Ellie, as well as her sister Ellen, brother Wesley and several nieces and nephews.

Over the course of her life, Barbara developed and nurtured an extensive network of friends and acquaintances with whom she shared a passion for the arts. She joined a number of artist’s guilds and collectives, providing her with a sense of community as well as the opportunity to display and sell her art over a period of many years. Whether with a paint brush, needle & thread, sewing machine, or kiln, Barbara’s artistic curiosity led her down many paths and provided the foundation for many life-long friendships. She deeply cherished gathering with friends over lunch to sew, chat, paint or stitch and often drove great distances to join her friends for a game of bridge.

Hosting holiday gatherings for the extended family was particularly important for Barbara, a tradition she and Donald maintained for many years. She accumulated an extensive photo collection of these family events, as well as gatherings of friends and fellow artists which she carefully organized with a deeply-felt sense of responsibility. We would like to share these photos with you in a “Celebration of Life” presentation to be held online in the coming weeks, since the current pandemic has made it impossible for us to hold a funeral service where we could gather to share our thoughts and heal our hearts. In addition to photos from across the many chapters of her life, we will be sharing insights into her art, her family history and the numerous crafts & arts groups which provided her so much joy and fulfillment. For Barbara, living was equivalent to doing – she was always focussing her talents on something and left us with many records of her endeavours to share with you all. Assembling this presentation will take considerable time but we will be contacting you all once again in the coming weeks with the instructions you’ll need to join us for this celebration of her life.

Finally, for those who might wish to send flowers, we kindly invite you to make a donation to one of two institutions Donald has chosen on Barbara’s behalf; the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, which supports the hospital where doctors and staff provided her invaluable care and support. Further information about both of these institutions can be found using the “Memorial Gift” button above.

Love to all,
Donald, Scott and Brent.

Dear Don, Brent and Scott
We are so very sorry to hear of Barbara’ passing.
We fondly remember Barbara and Don’s wonderful sixtieth wedding anniversary celebration in Kemptville. We also remember the last time we all got together at our home on County Road 23 for our pre-Christmas party – Barbara so enjoyed herself quietly relaxing and reading in our secluded family room that we had trouble finding her at the end of the evening!
Sincere condolences
Nina & Ian

So sorry for your loss. I only knew her briefly but she seemed to be a very talented woman.

Dear Don and Family, our deepest sympathies. Barbara was a very special person, great artist and wicked sense of humour. We will miss her.

We met Barb and Don at Newcomers in Ottawa over 40 years ago!
So very sorry to hear of Barbs passing. She was a kind and beautiful lady and probably the most talented I would ever know!
Barb and I did many arts together and also we played couples bridge.
Covid prevented us from a visit to your new home on the Island.
I’ll never forgive that this was stolen from us. I will hold closely the
beautful lap quilt she gifted me! Sincere condolences to the Dutton family, Don and Marilynn

From: Rosemary Sorfleet
