Barbara Darling

January 2, 1924 - December 27, 2013

Died peacefully in her sleep at home on December 27th 2013.  She was a week shy of her 90th birthday.  Babs was an all-Canadian girl, living at various times in Regina SK, Calgary AB, Vancouver BC, Trois Pistoles QC, Toronto ON, Winnipeg MB, Montreal QC and Duncan BC. She loved to spend her summer months lakeside – be it Lake Windermere, Lake Okanagan, Lake of the Woods, Lac Tremblant or Lake Cowichan.  Wherever souls gather in the hereafter, Babs is attending a grand reunion party with her husband Frank (d.1976), son Peter (d.2008) and daughter Fran (d.2013),  and sharing the latest news of her much loved surviving daughters Marcia, Barbara and Mary; daughter in law Nancy; sons in law Pete, Mack, Dave and Mike; grandchildren Nancy, David, Sascha, Alanna, Robbie, Barrett, Keegan, Shea, and Willem; granddaughters in law Lori and Kaylan; grandsons in law Dan and Philippe, and great grandchildren Emilia, Isla, Olivier, William,  Rose, Zady and Abby.   Babs led a full and deeply engaged life, but her family was most important – she would regularly refer to herself as “the richest woman in the world” for all the love that surrounded her.

A committal service will be held St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 5800 Church Road, Duncan BC on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Come spring, when the azaleas are in bloom, her remains will be scattered in the garden of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Kerrisdale.  It was her childhood church, and her spiritual home during the many years she lived in Vancouver after her husband died.  In lieu of flowers, donations to St Jude’s Anglican Home (www.stjudes.bc.ca) where Babs spent many years as a volunteer, director and chairperson of the Board, would be appreciated.

It was always a delight when Barbara came to visit Marcia and Mack in Toronto. She was elegant and understated, fun to be with and genuine, a woman of both grace and depth. She was unstintingly loving.

We are sorry to hear of her death, and glad so many of her qualities live on in Marcia.

From: Andrew Pike
Relation: St Jude's Board and church Connections

I send condolences and thanks for a life well lived. Having served on the board of St Jude’s Home, Vancouver, with Babs for several years I came to value her love and respect for people. She was always generous of her love, care, and time. Her life and example has been,is, and will continue to be an inspiration to many.

From: Susan McIntosh Burnett
Relation: Friend of my late parents, Jim and Betty McIntosh

Dear Marcia, Barbara, Mary and families,

My late parents, Jim and Betty McIntosh, were great freinds of your parents, Babs and Frank. My mother, Betty, was God Mother to your late sister, Frances. I am sorry to know of your Mother’s and Frances’s passing.

I have fond memories of Babs, a beautifiul, tall woman who was gracious, kind and calm. (I called her about three or four years ago to say hello, at which time we had a lovely chat.)

I am thinking of all of you as you mourn your dear mother’s passing.

Kind regards,
Susan McIntosh Burnett

From: Gordon Francis
Relation: Close family friend

We are sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. Babs was the oldest friend of our mother Sheila (nee Alexander, d1976), and a great comfort to her during times of illness. We’ll remember Babs’s good humour, kindness, amazing posture, and what a lady she was.

Margaret and Harvey only just learned about Babs death today. We were saddened to have missed her funeral. Her generation of Darlings are rapidly disappearing. She was a very vivacious and caring person.
