Tribute
Born in Keewatin, ON Jan 4, 1922, Dad passed away on January 27, 2015 at the Cowichan District Hospital, Duncan, BC at the age of 93. He is survived by his four daughters, Alva Popowich (Richard) – Halifax, Shirley Hyslop – Chemainus, Lois Kearney – Winnipeg, Heather Grant (Gene) – Kenora; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; his brother Ed Barnard (Doreen) – Keewatin and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Lily and Christopher Barnard; wife of 61 years Ann; sons Randy and Jim; son-in-law Art; grandchildren Dayna and Jason; sisters Winnie and Mary; brothers; Jim, Walter and Joe. Dad worked at the Kenora Mill for 42 years, retiring as a Security Guard in1986. In 1996 Mom and Dad moved to Chemainus, BC to join other family members and to get away from the cold winters. Dad fought back against health setbacks during the past few years, but his mind, wit and sense of humour remained as sharp as ever. He passed peacefully, on his own terms with Shirley by his side. Special thanks go to Shirley for taking such good care of Dad. He couldn’t have remained in his home without the love, care, support and companionship you provided. The family would like to thank Dr. Gee and the staff at the Cowichan District Hospital for their outstanding care for Dad. Their kindness and compassion during his stay are greatly appreciated. Cremation has taken place. As per Mom and Dad’s wishes they will be interred this summer with their granddaughter Dayna at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery. A “come and go” remembrance will take place at that time. The details will be announced at a later date. Rest well Dad, you are deeply loved and will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
