Tribute
Alan J Jones
18 May 1950 – 15 March 2025
He is predeceased by his mother, Betty Jones who passed away in 2017 and father Richard “Jim” Jones in 1987. He is survived by a son and daughter; James and Victoria Chumsa-Jones.
Alan John Jones was born in England in Walthamstow, a borough of East London. He immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 4 years old and grew up in Toronto Ontario. In his young adulthood he often travelled back to London England as he was a world traveller.
He had many jobs throughout his life, such as at a printing press when he was a teenager, a stress reliever in the Alberta oil sands, and a gasfitter in Victoria among many others. His final job before retirement was at Pacific Energy in Duncan BC.
In one of his trips to Thailand he met the mother of his two children, Sureerat “Fytong” Chumsa. The two married and started a family together in the Cowichan Valley after Fytong immigrated to Canada. Alan became a father at the age of 44 with the birth of his son, James. He then suffered from a near fatal aneurysm which he miraculously survived after having the fortune of receiving medical care from the best surgeon available. After recovering from his aneurysm, he had his second child, Victoria, who was born 6 years after his first.
Al and Fytong eventually separated in which she left the family and moved back to Thailand. At that point, Alan was already retired and took on the role of a single father raising a teenage son and 10 year old daughter.
Al was a golf enthusiast who in good health and good weather would play at Duncan Meadows. When not on the golf course, he would keep up with the lasted PGA tournaments and top golfers of the world. He also enjoyed watching TV shows that took place in the British countryside on Vision, PBS, and Knowledge Network and was even a Knowledge Partner.
He spent a lot of time in his garden, often watching the hummingbirds drink the nectar out of the feeder that he prepared for them. He also smoked as often as he was outside, usually every morning, evenings, before and after meals. He eventually developed lung cancer and passed away at the age of 74.
The children of Alan Jones would like to thank Julie Rosenthal for taking care of their father in his final days and helping them both after his passing, as well as all the friends and family who came to visit him and offer support.
A private Celebration of Life will be held with close family and friends at his home. We ask those in attendance to avoid wearing all black since he was a colourful person.

Relation: I know his son, James, and learned of his dad's diagnosis earlier in 2025
Hello James and Victoria, and anyone else who was close to your Dad,
I’m writing this because I’ve just learned, while reading the Obituaries in the Cowichan Valley Citizen, that your Dad Alan passed away on March 15. It’s already April 2 as I write this, 18 days later, and I’m indeed sorry I didn’t know of this until now. I learned from James only weeks ago that your Dad had received a serious diagnosis, and that all of you would not have much longer to be together.
As I’ve realized in my own life and from experience with others, there aren’t words–certainly no words or phrases that I know of!–that can properly express what really matters in such a situation. I can only say that I’m very sorry that your Dad didn’t have an opportunity to be well for a lot longer, and to have more time to experience things and to be with you two and with others. I can guess at some of what you must be feeling. I send my most positive thoughts, and energies, even if only via email!
